My father had a mechanical calculator, with more digits than that.
Watching it divide was always fun.

To make a division, you had to turn around a handle clockwise and counter-clockwise until you got zero residuals.
Iron pumping was easier. NCR built electromechanical calculators of 100 Kg. to the least. You had to press a button

of sines/cosines and exponentiation/logarithms (x86 FPU FYL2X/FYL2XP1)

then yes, otherwise no. Not all computers, especially older ones, have

routines certainly do. Or they use faster algorithms that mathematicians
have created. Sometimes lookup tables.

I do system level programming of an operating system. Not too long ago I
had to implement a square root algorithm in integer math. Quite unusual
for that type of work. I could not call library code from that mode, nor
did that CPU have built-in square root instructions, I wrote my own.

Going back to the beginning of this thread I wrote:
